Make efforts to conserve electricity

Dear Editor,

It is a well-known fact that Arunachal is running with shortage of power from many years especially in the rural areas even though it claims itself to be the most largest hydro power harnessing state of India. Many hydel dams are yet to be built and implemented in various districts of Arunachal, but if the present trend continues, most rural areas will still be deprived of electricity.

A commonly seen trend in the various towns of the state is the illegal electrical connectivity from the overhead transmission lines without prior knowledge to the concerned authority. This misuse of electrical resource has to be checked at the earliest.

In this regard,we would like to mention some steps taken by the township of Lonavale, a hill station between Mumbai & Pune. Maharashtra is the first state in the country to roll out "Prepaid Electricity Meters" as a part of the efforts to check theft & wrongful diversion of power. This was launched by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited.

The prepaid meter system is just like the prepaid concept of mobile phones. Just like a mobile phone user buys talk time, potential consumers have to purchase units of electricity for their monthly usage. The consumers will be provided with a smart card which needs to be inserted in their meters. The meters can also be recharged online from the authority’s website.

Likewise, in Arunachal by adopting this system at least we can hope to conserve some units of electricity which can be distributed properly in the rural places.

Adopt means that does not affect the common masses

Dear Editor,

The woes of  the Bandh culture at the state Capital, Itanagar hits hardest the ordinary denizens, the hand to mouth small time fruit, vegetable, fish, the meat sellers, daily basis labourers and other workers who solely depend on the earning of the day for everyday livelihood. Every time the Bandhs are called  by the one organization or the other  on Issues which has nothing to do with the small people but they are bound to be the  worst victims of the Bandhs. But it is an excellent and all time great breaks for the haves group of the state who convert the Bandh opportunity into celebrations and enjoyments in their respective homes with laptops, computers, gambling, watching movies, drinking and all sorts but the poor man is all set to run to the market to make their first sell and eagerly waits for the last minute of the bandh to be over. Hundreds of vehicles carrying passengers of all categories of the poor and the middle class families coming from the districts for treatment and other official works are stranded at police check gates for days. The Bandhs are good means to focus the grievances of the caller but who risks about the sufferings of the people and for how long will it continue and who should be blamed for. The recent 48 hours ANSU Bandh is too long a period to carry yet the Issue seems absolutely genuine for the callers on one unknown Pradeep Thakur  who has enraged the sentiments of the biggest community by trying to Isolate them  with others in the state. People say that it is politically motivated yet others cry in the street with communal sentiments but have it really become Impossible for the Govt. of the day to figure out the Issue with the aggrieved group. How great is Pradeep Thakur to offend a community and to  throw the state Capital into great trouble every time and can he not be brought to book or can we not adopt some other formula to stop giving too much mileage to Mr. Nobody. I am always a diehard fan of the students movement in the state and had led AAPSU, ANSU, APPDSU etc. in the past and cannot afford to hear the complains, hue and cries against bandhs given by the students organizations. The responsible citizens of the state capital needs to move one step ahead  involving all organizations including students ,civil society, senior citizens and others to evolve a popular opinion to lessen the sufferings of the common man by impressing upon the organizations to adopt other democratic means to demonstrate their cause except Bandhs.

Family reunion prog in Sri Lanka

UNICEF Sri Lanka is expanding its work in the Northern Province to reunite children with their families displaced during the last phase of the civil war. The programme, run in co-operation with the government, began in late 2009 months after the end of the war.

Although progress has been slow, it has succeeded in reuniting a number of children with their families. Hundreds are still missing and many adults are also unaccounted for.

UNICEF's staff, trained in family tracing skills, have been working in two districts of northern Sri Lanka trying to locate missing children. In partnership with a local government tracing programme, they are now expanding their work to cover the whole of the northern province and part of the east, which was also in the war zone.

After the violence and chaos of the final two to three years of conflict, many adults and children remain unaccounted for. Some may not have survived but others have done, and this Family Tracing Unit is doing its best to find them. The unit has traced 45 missing children and reunited them with their families; another 57 cases are being verified.
